Firmin Breaux built the first bridge that spanned Bayou Teche. It was a footbridge that became a popular landmark and allowed the town to be the only one along the bayou to prosper on both sides simultaneously. The current bridge that spans Bayou Teche in Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, was erected in 1950.

Breaux Bridge celebrates its 150th birthday in 2009! The community-wide celebration will take place September 11-12. Click here for more information on the event. I am always drawn to old typewriters when I visit flea markets. I had my camera with me on this day and took advantage of the photo opportunity. It wasn't until I viewed the photos later on my computer screen that I discovered the "Y" key was upside down. It was like finding the Golden Easter Egg!

This photo has become one of my personal favorites. Perhaps because it is so different from the keyboards and touch-screens of today's technology. Perhaps because it reminds me of simpler times.

This is the door found on the front of the old ice house, located near the bridge in downtown Breaux Bridge. When I was a child, ice blocks were dispensed from the front of the building. You could insert a quarter in the slot and a large block of ice was delivered to you on a conveyor belt.

This is a common "weed" found in lawns and fields of South Louisiana. It is often referred to as "wild onion". However, this little gem is actually a tiny member of the lily family. The flowers barely measure one half inch across. A native to the U.S., it is also commonly referred to as crow poison or false garlic.

The Roseate spoonbill (Ajaia ajaja) is one of several migratory birds that roost at Lake Martin every spring. Some of the locals refer to them as "flamant" (flay-MOHN), French for "flamingo". This is because their size and bright pink feathers cause them to often be mistaken for flamingos. Their bright pink plumage is quite stunning and is complemented by their bright orange tail feathers.

Blue-eyed Grass belongs to the iris family and produces a tiny flower, measuring about one-half inch across. Even tinier than this flower was the fly sitting on it. In the Spring, these grow in abundance along the path that surrounds Lake Martin. They are joined by several species of wildflower in shades of purple, yellow, and white.

A few clouds had gathered as the sun was setting opposite this clutch of trees. This created a spotlight effect as though a huge beam of light were aimed at the trees. The trunks of cypress trees are a copper-red color and seem to glow in the light of the setting sun.

I recently learned that Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) produces a flower. Most people live their entire lives and never notice the hidden gem because it is tiny and inconspicuous. Another interesting fact about Spanish moss is that it isn't moss at all. It's a member of the bromeliad family.
